The Burman Team have previously visited Phaung Daw Oo Monastic High school for an educational workshop on “career and college major insights”, and “free educational resource sharing”.

Section 1: Career and College Major Insights

One of the major focal areas of the workshop was to provide information about college pathways to high school students. Teachers from the educational department learned about the series of steps students have to take for an effective transition from high school to college. The workshop provided a comprehensive roadmap for students – from choosing college majors according to different interests, to understanding the complexities of the college admissions process.

“The Burman workshop introduced me to various websites, and there are most websites I already knew but the workshop has helped me to understand it more in detail and what more I can help with the students to what’s most beneficial in their studies and how to catch their attention during studies, overall the whole workshop was very beneficial.”

Choosing a Major

A second important component of this workshop was to help students choose their major. The Burman Team created a comprehensive flow-chart, with many interests showcasing to different career options. Which gave students the opportunity to follow their passion, and exposing them to future career opportunities. Additionally, to take account of student’s personality, we recommended teachers to ask students to take the Myers Briggs Type Indicator test, to ensure students are self-aware before making this important life decision.

“The Burman workshop was an unexpected but extremely valuable experience. The young presenters provided us with a wealth of information that was beneficial not only for the students but also for us teachers. I was particularly glad to learn about new websites and resources, and I hope we can have more workshops like this in the future.”

Educational Tools and Resources

Online educational tools and resources were presented to teachers at the Burman Workshop, so it can be passed on to the 200 students from educational department. While websites such as Khan Academy, Kahoot, Desmos and Quizlet, may seem familiar to us, students attending government schools are often unaware of those tools. By sharing these interactive learning tools with the teachers, we hope students at Phaung Daw Oo can have an improved learning experience. In addition, YouTube channels with educational content was also introduced, such as Organic Chemistry Tutor, CrashCourse, and TED-Ed.

“I gained a lot of new knowledge from this workshop. It was clear that the presentations were well-prepared, and many of the links, websites, and channels were new to me. As a teacher from Paung Daw Oo, I found this workshop very useful and look forward to sharing what I learned with my students. This workshop is beneficial for each teacher individually based on their subject. Thank you.”

Free Educational Resources

Students were introduced to websites where they can download educational PDFs at no cost such as Ocean of PDF. They were also explained to platforms for coding, like Code.org and apps for language learning like Duolingo. The workshop was also beneficial in providing a list of readily available resources for students who are interested in expanding their skills and knowledge beyond the classroom.
