Established on February 14, 2019, YEC has provided sanctuary to more than 400 children despite its short five-year history. YEC has become a beacon of hope for orphans to ensure the daily need and education of orphans and to remind them that they have a bright future ahead. The Burman recently interviewed YEC manager, Cherry Oo, to gain a deeper understanding of the day-to-day work at the orphanage. It is clear from the interview with Cherry Oo that her dedication to the children takes many forms and that young spirits are impacted by the basic values of the practice.
Urgent Needs
Manager Cherry Oo stressed the critical needs of the orphans. Daily Necessities: These basic items, such as clothing, toiletries, and bedding, help the children to survive and maintain their dignity every day. Food Supplies: raw materials, such as oil, rice, and salt, to cook nutritious meals, so no child goes hungry to sleep. Educational Supplies: Textbooks, notebooks, pencils, and pens give the children power through knowledge and learning to achieve their dream careers effortlessly. Female Hygiene Products: These items including pads, sanitary napkins, and intimate care, keep the many female orphans healthy and comfortable. Baby Essentials: Diapers, wet tissues, and milk powder help the youngest kids to grow and stay pleasant.
Heartfelt Volunteerism
A unique and heartwarming aspect of YEC is former high school graduates’ voluntary participation. These compassionate individuals return as volunteers, dedicating their time to teaching and caring for the younger orphans. Their selfless contribution embodies the true spirit of giving back, creating a cycle of support and love.
Structured Daily Life
YEC follows a structured daily schedule to give the children a good mix of education, rest, and personal care. The children’s day begins with school from 8:00 am to 10:30 am, followed by lunch at 11:00 am. After a rest period from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm, they return to school from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The afternoon is then dedicated to personal time, including baths, cleaning, and chores, with dinner served at 6:00 pm.
Financial Strain of Meal Provision
Due to other issues affecting the finances of citizens, the demands for providing meals have surged higher than ever. Manager Cherry Oo detailed the substantial costs that reflect the scale of care required. The expense for breakfast and dinner is approximately 2.5 lakh each, while lunch costs 3.5 lakh and snacks amount to 3 lakh.
“Amidst the current financial and political challenges, our most important needs are daily necessities for the children, with food being our top priority”
— Manager Cherry Oo
The Call to Action
The reflections by manager Cherry Oo emphasize the unfailing commitment of YEC, to provide adequate education, food, and care for the orphans until they can live independently. YEC works tirelessly in the face of enormous obstacles to provide a secure and nurturing environment for every child under their care. Every child has the right to dream, to learn, and to flourish. Support given to YEC will enable them to continue their work and transform the lives of these children who all deserve a chance.
